Taste Buds: Ideal Provisions

Wheeling has impressive lunch hot spot!

Small but mighty.

That is the only way the Buds can describe Ideal Provisions, a unique eatery located right smack dab in the heart of downtown Wheeling.

The Buds learned of the gourmet food cart via a menu slipped to them by an alert co-worker. After reading what mouth-watering selections awaited, they were DYING to get there and try them out first hand!

Ideal Provisions, located at 14th and Main St. downtown, operates out of an ice cream cart in the parking lot of Mountain Mama's and has been open for about two months. They offer a tasty selection of panini-style sandwiches, wraps, burgers and barbecue. The Buds have learned that owner Dean Barath makes everything from scratch - from the dressings and coleslaw to the homemade chips and fresh cut fries.

To the Buds it sounds like heaven on wheels.

In fact, it took them nearly three weeks of studying the menu to finally decide what to order! With ingredients like fresh basil, Guggisburg baby Swiss and raspberry aioli - who can blame us?!

The menu includes such popular items as the Italian Grilled Cheese (roasted red, orange and yellow peppers, provolone and fresh basil on wheat bread cooked panini style) and the Smoked BBQ Pulled Pork Sammy (slow-roasted pulled pork topped with homemade honey barbecue and Italian slaw). They also offer single and double burgers that patrons can add various cheeses and applewood smoked bacon to, as well as a few specialty burgers - for example the Dirty Burger which is topped with their BBQ pulled pork and Italian slaw. Wow!

Bud Shaunna didn't read much past the words "fresh basil" when choosing to sample the Italian Grilled Cheese. This baby did not disappoint! It was loaded with colorful peppers and the cheese was oozing out the sides - making it finger-licking good. Served on top of a bed of their homemade chips, this deliciously filling lunch rang in at $7.

Turkey breast makes a strong appearance on the menu in the form of the Rachael (turkey, Swiss, thousand island and slaw on wheat flat bread); a turkey wrap (topped with Swiss, lettuce, roasted red pepper, onion and raspberry aioli) and a turkey club (topped with bacon, Gouda, lettuce, tomato, onion and ranch aioli). Yep, that did say Gouda!

Bud Em opted for the turkey wrap and boy, was she ever glad! The large wheat wrap was loaded with the delicious toppings and cut into three pieces and rang in at $6.50. The meat was fresh and the combination of Swiss cheese with the red peppers and raspberry dressing was dynamite! She would surely order this again - but first she wants one of everything else on the menu.

All "sammies" are served with a side of fresh fried potato chips. Both Buds raved about the goodness of said chips. Thick and crispy with a hint of salt, one simply won't find something so tasty on any store shelf. But wait - it gets better: Ideal Provisions also makes fresh cut fries and curly fries. Winning!

Aside from the delicious attractions mentioned above, they also have daily specials, some of which include smoked ribs and chicken, handmade meatball hoagies and - wait for it - homemade chicken pot pie topped with puff pastry. We just can't take any more!

Ideal Provisions is open on weekdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Buds suggest you get there ASAP!
