ST. CLAIRSVILLE The city council reviewed several ongoing summer projects during last night's meeting.

A safety award from National American Public Power was presented to the electric department for the 21st year in a row. Don Smithberger of the electric department accepted.

"We are very proud of this record," said Mayor Robert Vincenzo, crediting the employees for their dedications.

Smithberger noted that the as of 2011 the city had completed 11 thousand hours with no accidents. He credited his team's constant efforts at updating and improving safety.

"Safety is constantly on our minds," he said.

Vincenzo noted that the new amphitheatre will be officially dedicated at 6 p.m. All are welcome and town officials were invited to attend and show support. Hopes are high for a good crowd and clement weather.

Vincenzo also thanked the Master Gardeners and Boy Scouts for their work around the city park and trail. He noted that they plan further work on other sites in the future.

In addition, three new summer grass cutters have started work around the city.

Vincenzo noted Saturday's soapbox derby was a successful event.

"I think it's a community project that's growing more and more," he said, crediting the operators. "They've done a very, very good operation."

Also, Council Member Jim Weisgerber congratulated St. Clairsville's Destination Imagination team for their high worldwide placement during the recent contest.

Planning and Zoning Administrator Tom Murphy noted a Board of Zoning Appeals meeting was set for June 21, 5:30 p.m. Items on the agenda include a conditional use application from an insurance company at 247 East Main Street and a variance request.

Council also received a letter from the St. Clairsville Gardner's Forum requesting the reinstallation of road bumpers that were removed during construction of the various shelters within the park. The forum voiced safety concerns regarding the possibility of speeders.

The pool at Memorial park is open and in use.

The next meeting will be held June 18, 7:30 p.m.
