Blazes strike vacant homes

SMITHFIELD - Despite the efforts of firefighters from Jefferson and Harrison counties, two vacant houses in Smithfield were destroyed by fire early today.

An investigator from the state fire marshal's office is scheduled to check on the causes of the two fires on High Street in the Jefferson County village. The fire calls both were received shortly after midnight.

A spokesperson from the Jefferson County 911 emergency system said the first call was received at 12:10 a.m., and the other was at 12:27 a.m. Upon the arrival of the fire departments, both structures reportedly were fully ablaze.

Firefighters were still on the scene several hours later in order to extinguish hot spots.

According to information available shortly before the newspaper deadline this morning, firefighters were from Smithfield, Dillonvale, New Athens, Adena, Unionport, Brilliant, Harrison County, Wintersville and Yorkville.

Reportedly, no one was injured in the two fires.
