MARTINS FERRY - Martins Ferry Police arrested two men in connection with the recent acts of vandalism at the Hillandale baseball field.
Chief John McFarland confirmed late Monday evening that Bryce A. Sztary, 21, Powhatan Point, and Clay M. Johnson, 19, Martins Ferry, were arrested and charged with criminal damaging and transported to the Belmont County Jail.
According to McFarland, a few weeks ago his department was informed of damage up at the field.
It was reported two men were in a pickup truck performing donuts on the field. They allegedly lost control of the truck and plowed into the field's fence, causing damage.
A picnic table was also overturned and trash was strewn around the field grounds.
McFarland reported that his department benefited from a tip received recently and the two men were able to be apprehended.
Sztary's address is listed as a Powhatan residency. However, he is a graduate of Martins Ferry High School.
That, nearly as much as the acts itself, is tough for McFarland to take.
"They are both Martins Ferry guys that did it and I'm disappointed over that," McFarland said. "They probably played on that same field when they were kids.
"It makes you wonder what goes through people's heads."
