The River Greens Golf Course will once again host the Division II sectional golf tournament in late September.
Several Ohio Valley players got an up close and personal look at the course last week in the River Green's Junior Open.
St. Clairsville senior Adam Jeffries claimed the A Flight with an impressive round of 71. Martins Ferry senior Taylor Shane was second with a 78.
St. Clairsville's Seth Vannoy finished fourth in the 15-16 year old division with a round of 76.
SALT FORK JUNIOR
Martins Ferry's golf team won the OVAC title and qualified for the district a season ago and could be en route to another strong season after numerous players on its squad have had impressive summers.
Senior Taylor Shane won the Salt Fork Junior Golf Tournament last week with a round of 76. He was eight shots clear of his nearest competitor. Harrison Central's Drew Horn was seventh in the tournament and Ferry's Zach Riggenbach was 10th.
St. Clairsville's Seth Vannoy, who transferred from Marietta, finished in a tie for fifth in the 15-16 year old division.
Hard to believe that this week is the final shot at glory for the professional golfers. The annual PGA Championship, the final major of the season, will begin Thursday at the Ocean Course at Kiawah Island.
Many believe this course could provide one of the stiffest major challenges of the year.
Thus far, there's been three different major winners, including the ageless Ernie Els, who took the British Open last month.
Don't look for Els to add the PGA title to his winnings this weekend. I am going with Graeme McDowell as the winner.
He won the U.S. Open a few years ago at Pebble Beach and I look for him to add to his major resume at a course, which borders the opposite ocean as Pebble.
WHEELING CC CHAMPIONSHIP
