MIHALIC, George R.

MIHALIC, George R., 93, of Maynard, Ohio, died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 17, 2012.

He was born in Maynard, December 9, 1918, son of the late John and Elizabeth Daunte Mihalic.

A member of the Greatest Generation, George served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, Troop B 81st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II where he earned five Bronze Stars. He was a charter member of the American Legion Post 666 in Maynard, serving as Chaplain for many years.

A member of St. Stanislaus Church in Maynard, George was a devout Roman Catholic. He was a retired coal miner from Consolidation Coal Company Franklin 25 Mine and member of the United Mine Workers of America.

George was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and brother who will be remembered for his dedication to family and for the twinkle in his blue eyes.

In addition to his parents, he is joined in Heaven by his oldest daughter, Naomi R. Caldwell; four brothers, Alex, John, Michael and Andy Mihalic; and three sisters, Marge Carmack, Betty Vetula and Helen Roush.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Helen Kowalczyk Mihalic; two daughters, Leslie (Dimitri) Vassilaros and Laurie Leonard; a son, Mark (Sharon) Mihalic; a grandson, Jason Woods; son-in- law, James Caldwell; son-in-law, Rodney Leonard; a sister, Agnes Buchkoski; two brothers, Anthony and Frank Mihalic; several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends will be received on Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville with a Vigil Service at 3 p.m.

Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11 a.m. in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Maynard with Father Thomas Graven the celebrant. Burial will follow in Holly Memorial Gardens.

The Belmont County Council of American Legions will conduct services at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday in the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Valley Hospice or Maynard Community Vol. Fire Dept.
