WORKING on the first bridge spanning the Ohio River and connecting Wheeling Island with Bridgeport was begun in 1836. According to the "Centennial History of Belmont County" the contractor abandoned the work before it was completed. The Zane Brothers completed the bridge in 1838. The bridge became known as the "old covered bridge" and became the property of the Wheeling and Belmont Bridge Co. It was replaced with a steel bridge at a cost of $65,974.04.
