BRIDGEPORT - With students arriving for their first day of school today, the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District's Board of Education met briefly, but busily, Wednesday night in regular session.

"We're prepared and ready to go," Superintendent Ted Downing announced during a 23-minute meeting in the Administration Building. "Our teacher workshops went really well, so we're ready to get at it."

It's been a busy week on the Bulldogs' campus.

The first Belmont County Teachers In-Service Day in quite some time was held Monday morning, and Downing reported it to be a success.

"I think it went very well and I have heard nothing but positive things from superintendents of other school districts," he told the board. "Our building looked really nice, and some people that have never been here were really surprised at how it looked."

Downing said the event could become an annual affair, but added, "We haven't gotten that far yet."

Tuesday night's open house was "packed," according to the superintendent. "We had a real nice turnout."

He said that during Wednesday's teachers meeting, members of the Belmont County Sheriff's Office visited and talked to the staff about how to handle different types of emergency situations.

In other business, the five-member board unanimously passed the following:

the employment of two substitute teachers: Jennifer Rosier (classified) and Kimberly Vitale (certified).

the resignation of Misty Glitch, effective Aug. 1, 2012.

approved supplemental contracts to: Rick Yourkovich (volunteer boys' basketball coach); Beverly Plumly (testing coordinator); Dave Williamson (head baseball coach); Tom Joseph (head softball coach); Kayla Magistro (assistant softball coach); and Greg Harkness (assistant boys' basketball coach).

approved the transfer and hiring of Maria Kayafas from her Title Tutor position to the Title IIA position to replace Misty Glitch.
