• ‘Volley for the Cure’ event benefits Susan G. Komen Foundation

St. Clairsville came from behind in the first set trailing 21-17 to tie it up at 22 all and ultimately win the opener 25-23 setting up a 3-set sweep of visiting Union Local as the Red Devils' hosted "Volley for the Cure" to benefit Susan G. Komen for the cure.

Each team wore custom pink t-shirts and fundraising events including t-shirt sales and a silent auction were held. Volley for the Cure was created as way to honor and celebrate the heroic fights against breast cancer. This event was dedicated to all men and women who have been touched by breast cancer with the hope that this devastating disease will one day be cured.

The Lady Red Devils won the second set 25-20 and the third 25-17 to bring out the brooms on John Jenkins Court.

"Union Local never makes it easy," said Red Devils' coach Christa Truchan as her squad improved to 3-2 on the young season.

"Our girls here at St. Clairsville have put in a huge effort in the off season," added Truchan. "They have been working hard and it paid off tonight."

On the visitors bench, Union Local head coach Sarah Gibeaut was looking on the positive side of the performance of her Jets.

"We are coming off of a rough week," said Gibeaut. "We came out tonight and played hard the whole way. I felt like even though we did not get the win, we really fought for it tonight."

Leading the way for the Red Devils was Brigee Mick with nine kills, seven digs and five points with three aces. Alex St. Clair added eight deadly spikes, three blocks, five digs and 12 points with four aces.

Ashleigh Moulder added six kills, two digs and five points with two aces.

Allie Harrison had 24 assists, three digs and seven points, with five no-return serves.

The Jets were paced by Shayla Otto with four kills, nine blocks, six digs and five points with two aces. Sarah Shepherd had four kills, four blocks and three digs. Carly Schafer added three kills, two blocks, 10 assists, seven digs and eight points.

St. Clairsville has a challenge Thursday as it hosts Indian Creek. Union Local falls to 1-4 and will have a week to work in practice before hosting Barnesville Monday.
