CALDWELL -- River's Pilots needed a fourth quarter comeback to score a 24-21 Friday night road conquest at Caldwell.
Coming off consecutive losses against Magnolia and Monroe Central, coach Mike Flannery's combine used solid offensive balance to knock off the host Redskins.
Following a scoreless opening quarter, Caldwell got on the board first with Caleb Van Meter tallying on a two-yard blast. Later in the period, Bricker Lori broke off a 25-yard scoring gallop which found River staring at a 14-0 deficit.
The Pilots needed all of a dozen seconds to make their presence felt. Nick Asturi pulled in Caldwell's ensuing kickoff and dashed 85 yards to the house. Colton Wright's PAT made for a 14-7 halftime lighting.
Both teams registered third period six-pointers. Van Meter exploded on an 81-yard TD jaunt and it was 21-7. River, however, would retaliate when quarterback Cody Caldwell unloaded for Asturi who headed to the house on a play covering 77 yards.
The Monroe County club then recorded 10 unanswered fourth period points to earn the win.
Asturi's three-yard TD romp and Wright's ensuing conversion evened the count at 21 and set the stage for a dramatic game-ending drive which Wright capped by kicking a game-winning 33-yard field goal as time expired.
River's Caldwell completed 8-of-18 throws, good for 147 yards. Kam Brown landed four receptions (51 yards) and Asturi caught three, good for 89.
Jordan Sapp ran for 65 yards to lead the Pilots' ground attack. Asturi added 34. Caldwell generated all 302 of its yards on the ground with Lori (128) and Andrew Minosky (105) each eclipsing the 100-yard mark.
River returns to action next Saturday at Zanesville Rosecrans.
