WEST LAFAYETTE - Two area teams extended their golf season for at least another week thanks to their efforts in the Division II sectional tournament at the challenging, par 72 River Greens Golf Course.
St. Clairsville, which advanced to the state tournament last fall, finished second and Martins Ferry took the sixth and final qualifying spot based on a tiebreaker with its fifth player to advance to next week's district tournament at the Granville Country Club in Central Ohio.
The Red Devils posted a solid score of 322, but they were 10 shots behind East Liverpool. The Potters have now won their last three head-to-head meetings with the Red Devils, including the OVAC Class 4A Tournament earlier this month.
Coach Rick Oberdick's team was led by seniors Adam Jeffries and Zach Keylor. Both posted 6-over rounds of 78. Senior Jared Burghy fired a solid round of 79, while senior Caden Myers checked in with a 87 to round out the scoring for the Red Devils.
The Potters were led by Blake Prince, who shot an even par round of 72. He shot a 1-under 35 on the backside of the course.
Martins Ferry, meanwhile, earned its second straight trip to the district tournament.
The Purple Riders posted a score of 339, which was identical to what John Glenn posted, but Ferry frosh Joel Shane was one stroke better than the Little Muskies' fifth score, sending the Riders onward.
Senior standout Taylor Shane, who won the OVGL title last Friday, shot a round of 79. He was two shots better than classmate Andrew Chlon and nine shots ahead of Zac Riggenbach.
Rounding out the scoring for the Purple was Chase Stuckey's 91.
Nary an area player - not on those teams - earned a trip to the district.
