CADIZ The Harrison?Hills Board of Education heard reports from the transportation department and a new athletic program during Thursday's meeting.
Regarding transportation, Director of Operations Ed Kovacik reported that bus drivers traveled 512,298 miles during the school year on regular daily routes. The district also added 38,353 miles for field trips and extracurricular events for a total of 550,651.
The district employed 26.7 regular educator personnel in transportation, with 4.3 special educators. Last year's budget was $1,277,546. Kovarik noted an increase of efficiency from prior years.
The average fuel cost last year was $3.41, with some fluctuation. Cost per pupil per regular education student is $883. The special education cost was $5,838 per student due to the need for specialized equipment and double personnel on the buses.
Last year's estimated fuel cost was $235,714.
"I think we had a very good year last year. We were very efficient in what we did," he said, noting the purchase of a new radio system and the special education bus. He said the district was considering the purchase of two more busses as money becomes available this fiscal year.
Regarding the bus garage, work continues on the interior walls and the exterior excavation is ongoing for the purpose of grease traps and sewage. The road has been built to the property and the pipes may all be installed at once.
Also, 5,000 feet of computer access wiring has also been installed.
In other matters, Harrison Jr./Sr. High School Principal Brent Ripley thanked the school board for approving the formation of a soccer club. There are currently 13 boys and eight girls.
Fundraising efforts have yielded $2,000 for uniforms next year.
Ripley added that the soccer program may continue to benefit student athletes in the future. He noted two Brazilian exchange students have also joined the teams and found it a welcome opportunity to teach their country's sport.
"It's been a great cultural activity, so I'm here to say thank you on behalf of everybody that's had a part in it," he said.
Among substitutes, board approved Jennifer Smith and Michelle Dunlap as aide/cafeteria/secretary; Mindi Vrable, Virginia Beiber and Kacee Spence as teacher/tutor.
Courtney Erdos was approved as Help Me Grow visit specialist effective Oct. 1, 2012-June 30, 2012.
Linda Brock was approved as 5.5-hour bus driver to the Jefferson County Parochial Schools effective Oct. 8, 2012.
Among supplemental, board approved Paul Banks, varsity track, and Joe Valesko, varsity assistant softball.
Board accepted the resignation of Kasondra Chaney as home visitor with Help Me Grow effective Sept. 21, 2012.
Board approved Scott Ward as volunteer supplemental coaches for 2012-2013 school year.
Board approved a medical leave of absence for Constance Campbell beginning Oct. 15, 2012 for up to 12 weeks.
Board approved disability retirement for Gail Everhart effective Sept. 1, 2011.
In matters of business and operation, board approved the accessible restroom grant with the Harrison County Board of Developmental Disabilities.
Board approved a resolution authorizing the school district board to apply for an active planning process with the Ohio School Facilities Commission Classroom Facilities Assistance Program.
Board also approved an agreement with Trinity Health Systems/Riverside Medical for an athletic trainer service agreement for the 2012-2013 school year.
Board authorized the sale and disposal of two school buses no longer needed for educational purposes in the Harrison Hills City School District.
Board approved a lease agreement with Veronica K. Miller to lease property for the duration of three years.
Board approved a service contract with Pauline Gratchen through Help Me Grow effective Sept. 28, 2012.
Relating to students, board accepted applications for four interdistrict students and approved their attendance under the district's open enrollment program for the 2012-13 school year.
