Copper wire thief caught in action

BRIDGEPORT - A Martins Ferry man is lodged in the Belmont County Jail following his arrest early Saturday morning in the village.

Bridgeport police, assisted by the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, arrested John Paul Bennington Jr., 23, of 140 North 9th St., shortly after midnight while he was in the process of stealing copper wire.

The theft occurred in an alley in the 600 block of Howard Street. Bennington allegedly cut a hole in a fence and was attempting to steal the wire when authorities, who were alerted by a neighbor, arrived.

According to a deputy at the Belmont County Sheriff's Department, Bennington is still jailed. He is facing charges of theft, possession of criminal tools, criminal trespassing, criminal damaging and an outstanding warrant for failure to appear.

His bond is set at $3,500 on the theft, possession of criminal tools, criminal trespassing and criminal damaging charges. The theft and possession of criminal tools charges are felonies of the fifth degree. The others are misdemeanors.

Meanwhile, a cash bond only of $448.50 was set on the failure to appear charge.
