Harrison County begins winter highway prep

CADIZ - The cold weather is upon us and snow cannot be far behind. This was evident when Doug Crabtree, representing the Harrison County Engineer's Office, appeared before the Harrison County Board of Commissioners Wednesday to open bids for highway salt.

The two bids received were from Morton Salt for $46.50 per ton and North American bidding at $56.33 per ton.

"The price has come down from recent years," said Crabtree. "In the past, we have been eligible to bid with Tuscarawas County but we were not eligible for that this year, but the Morton bid is comparable to that price."

Crabtree told the board that the county supplies salt for townships and villages at the same rate unless the county delivers. American Rock Salt notified the engineer's office they were unable to offer a bid at this time and the bids were tabled until the next meeting when the contract will be awarded.

The commissioners also approved Resolution 18-12, an application renewal with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources allowing the county to utilize brine water from local wells to treat aggregate. "This allows our department to apply brine to our stock piles of ashes," Crabtree added. "Which also saves the county on salt money for the roads."

The board also approved Agreement 47-12 between the county and the Ohio Department of Development to release funding for the CR 10 project in Freeport.

"The money comes from several different funds and the total grant monies are for $468,373 and will create 45 jobs," Crabtree stated. "The work is one 1.5 miles of road from the intersection of SR 800 to the new bridge."

The project will widen and resurface the section of road and must be completed by March 2013. The new section of road accessing the Vail mine will be resurfaced and widened in the spring.

Crabtree also announced the traditional Halloween Party held at the Tippecanoe Fire Department has been cancelled and instead the village will hold a traditional door-to-door beggars night on Oct. 31 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Commissioners also announced that the county will be advertising for bids on the two restroom renovations at the Department of Job and Family Services building. Bids will accepted until Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. and will be opened Nov. 12 at 10 a.m.

County Treasurer Vicki Sefsick announced that the new list of delinquent tax accounts had been compiled and sent to the prosecutors office.

In other business:

- Commissioners approved a general fund increase for County Court in the amount of $3,154.03.

- Approved appropriation of $100,000 into the Emergency Management Agency U92 wireless account to fund one dispatcher and MCM telecommunications contract services.

- Approved an increase in the Sheriff Levi fund of $20,000.

- Appointed Sandi Thompson to a one year term on the Regional Planning Commission. Appointed Mike Vinka and Barbara Pincola to two year terms on the RPC.
