Taste Buds: Country Cottage Cafe

Brilliant eatery has something for everyone

December 3, 2012

It's a good thing Thanksgiving only comes once a year.

After stuffing themselves with turkey, mashed potatoes and all of the other fixins' last Thursday, the Buds were finally ready to eat again on Monday.

Following a lead from an alert coworker, the Buds decided to head to Brilliant to check out what's been cooking at the Country Cottage Cafe.

The eatery, located on Ohio St., is small and has a cozy atmosphere and a friendly staff. The Buds dropped by during lunchtime and witnessed the steady stream of customers coming through the door. Clearly, the locals know where to get fed!

The menu at the Country Cottage Cafe offers patrons a wide selection of sandwiches, burgers, dinners, breakfast, salads and more - each one sounding better than the last. Sandwiches include clubs, slim jims, reubens, grilled chicken and a variety of burgers and cheeseburgers that sound absolutely mouth-watering.

Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. and features many combinations of the standard morning fare with a few highlights such as Sweet Potato Pancakes and the Broccoli, Tomato & Feta omelet. Yeah, we might be going back for breakfast!

Dinner options feature several comfort foods such as beef tips with noodles, country steak with gravy, and smothered or fried chicken. For those more in the mood for a salad there are plenty to choose from! The Buds were eyeing up the Buffalo Chicken Salad as well as the Cranberry Pecan Salad and the Roasted Banana Pepper Salad - now there's one you don't see every day!

Ultimately, the Buds decided to go all in and both ordered a sandwich with fries on the side. Bud Em decided to go with the Chicken Mushroom Melt with Brew City Fries on the side. The grilled chicken breast was tender and juicy sitting atop a fresh bun and would have been quite tasty by itself. But there were mushrooms and gooey Swiss cheese involved which made it even more delish! Needless to say, Bud Em gobbled every bite. With the wide cut fries on the side and a soda, the tab came to just over ten bucks. Well worth it for a tasty lunch.

Feeling slightly daring, Bud Shaunna opted for the Hot Pepper Burger (sans bun) with sweet potato fries on the side. The burger was more well-done than Bud S typically prefers, but it still tasted good. The tangy pepper-jack cheese and the banana peppers gave the burger enough zing, but add in the jalepenos and woo, boy! That was a spicy sandwich, but the Buds like when we can burn off our food while eating it. The sweet potato fries, served with a side dipping sauce the Buds figured was some type of buttery-caramel concoction, were off the hook. Bud Shaunna had minimal leftovers on her plate, and with a soda, her filling meal came to just over ten dollars.

As usual, the Buds left wearing smiles and feeling stuffed . . . much like those turkeys on Thanksgiving.
