Taste Buds: PJ’s Pizza

Buds pick up tasty dinner-to-go in New Martinsville

'Tis the season to be merry!

At least that's what they say.

If by "merry" they mean "running around like a crazy person to get shopping done, spending all the money you don't have and trying unsuccessfully not to make a pig out of yourself at the office Christmas party", then YES! The Buds would both agree.

When the Buds were in New Martinsville recently, they were so overcome with merriment that they realized they were becoming pressed for time but still needed to grab something for dinner.

Lucky for them, they found themselves passing PJ's Pizza on the way out of town. Deciding to take care of supper right then and there, the Buds decided to stop and see what they were all about. Hey, it's what we DO man!

PJ's Pizza, located on Third St., is a carry out and delivery only shop that offers patrons a tasty selection of pizzas, salads, sandwiches, pepperoni rolls and wedgies. Yes, we did say wedgies. But don't worry - these ones are pleasant!

For those who want pizza, PJ's offers toppings which include pepperoni, onion, ham, hot peppers, green peppers, mushrooms, sausage and both black and green olives. They also have the PJ Special that comes topped with pepperoni, onion, green peppers, hot peppers and sausage; and finally the Spinach Pizza. Salads at the eatery include the chicken salad and an anti pasta salad which - loaded with meats, cheeses and veggies - sound delightful.

Sandwiches come on 8 or 12 inch buns and include all the favorites: Italian, Hot Sausage, Meatball, Steak, Ham & Cheese, and Works which is topped with all the pizza toppings. Finally, there are the "Wedgies." No, they are not a middle school prank, they are baked, open faced pizza shells with your choice of steak, ham, Italian or turkey, choice of cheese and lettuce, tomato and mayo. Sounds like a little wedge of Heaven to us!

While studying the menu, Bud Em honed in on 'Feta' cheese and was thus immediately sold on the Spinach Pizza. The size small shell was generously topped with a garlic oil base, chopped spinach, mozzarella cheese and chunks of creamy feta. It took great restraint not to tear into the box on the drive home! But once there, it was on. Bud Em and her daughter polished off the six pieces in no time at all. Quite a tasty meal indeed.

Bud Shaunna, after pondering over the menu for a few minutes, threw her hands up in the air and said, "Oh, what the heck! Give me a 'wedgie'!" But she didn't mean THAT kind. She ordered the steak "wedgie" with mozarella cheese. So what is this hilariously named dish? It's actually a sandwich concocted on round pizza dough, which is then folded over to form a wedge. See! Makes perfect sense now, doesn't it?

As soon as Bud Shaunna took a whiff from the box, she was in carnivore heaven. She managed to hold off until she got home to share it with Bud Hubby, as this was quite a large "wedgie" indeed. There was plenty of steak and cheese, and even with the big size, it disappeared fast!

If you find yourself getting sucked into holiday merriment and just happen to be in New Martinsville, swing by PJ's Pizza for some holiday cheer - and good food too!
