Prep Basketball Roundup: St. C. boys win; Shadyside girls prevail, 71-57

St. Clairsville made it a perfect 2-0 week Saturday night, using a strong middle two quarters to fight off Claymont, 53-41.

The Red Devils are now 3-1 on the season and will take part in a holiday basketball showcase event at Marietta College on Friday against Division I school Upper Arlington. Tipoff is slated for 7:45 p.m.

Against the Mustangs, the Devils found themselves knotted at 10 after one, but turned it up a notch in the second. They outscored Claymont, 20-13 in the second and then used a strong 10-4 third quarter to open up a more comfortable margin.

Senior standout Dan Monteroso continued his fine play in the early season. The reigning Ohio Division II State Player of the Year poured in 24 points. Senior running mate Jerrid Marhefka went for 18 tallies.

Senior Riley Carlton had seven points.

Dylan Sterling led Claymont with 17 tallies.

HILAND 51, RIVER 42

AT BERLIN, two-time defending state champion Hiland used a strong second-quarter run and then held off invading River for a 51-42 victory Saturday night at the Perry Reese Jr. Center.

The Pilots led 14-9 after one, but the Hawks posted an 18-8 second quarter and then used a shot late in the third to re-take the lead and fought off several rallies by the Pilots in the fourth.

River was led by senior standout Brett Price, who scored 23 points and had eight rebounds. Matt Marconi had 10 points and three assists for the Pilots, who shot a chilly 15-of-54 from the field for 27 percent.

Hiland, which is now 5-1, was led by Todd Ropp, who had 13 points.

River, now 4-2, will host Buckeye Trail on Wednesday.

GIRLS

SHADYSIDE 71, MONROE CENTRAL 57

AT SHADYSIDE, the Lady Tigers put the brakes on a three-game losing skid with a solid 71-57 victory over Monroe Central Saturday evening.

The Lady Tigers, who are now 4-4, led 14-11 after one and 38-24 at the intermission.

Shadyside was paced in the scoring column by senior Hayley Holenka, who scored 23 points in the game. She is now sitting at 999 points for her career. Senior Karli Bonar went for 16 points.

Junior Toni Andes had 16 points and sophomore Kenzie Fielding had 13 markers on the interior.

Monroe Central (6-5) was led by Chelsie Roberts' 25 points and eight rebounds. Chelsie Tewanger had 13 markers.

The Lady Tigers next see action on Friday in the Martins Ferry Holiday Tournament against Division I school Pickerington Central. The Lady Seminoles are off until Jan. 3 when they trek to River.

JOHN MARSHALL 76, UNION LOCAL 58

AT GLEN DALE, The homestanding John Marshall Lady Monarchs jumped out to the gate to a 10-0 lead and eventually a 19-2 lead went on to post a convincing 76-58 victory against invading Union Local Saturday afternoon in Glen Dale.

The Lady Monarchs led 21-16 after one and 38-29 at the intermission. A strong, 24-13, third quarter proved to be too much for the Lady Jets to overcome.

The Lady Jets, who are now 7-4 and will host Buckeye Trail Saturday afternoon, were led by junior Cori Medley, who scored 20 points. Dallas Montag added 18 and senior Kayla Doty went for 13.

John Marshall, which was led by Kylie Howard's 21 points, held a 52-30 edge on the boards. Medley and Mikayla Patton each had seven boards.

HARRISON CENTRAL 48, BARNESVILLE 39

AT BARNESVILLE, invading Harrison Central used a strong second half to pull away from the homestanding Lady Shamrocks for a 48-39 victory Saturday evening.

The Lady Huskies looked up at a 20-19 deficit at the half, but outscored the Lady Shamrocks 29-19 in the second half, including 17-10 in the third.

Harrison Central, which is now 4-5 on the season, was led by Jess Ledger's 12 points. She hit four bonus baskets. Kara Dunfee and Jess Custer each had 11 points.

The Lady Shamrocks, who dip to 2-6 with the setback, were paced by Raquel Bahmer's 12 points. Shayla Markovich had eight points. She also had eight rebounds.

STEUBENVILLE CC 55, BEALLSVILLE 50

AT STEUBENVILLE, Beallsville led by one entering the fourth, but Steubenville Central proved to be too much down the stretch as it went on for a 55-50 victory.

The Lady Blue Devils were led by Madison Stephen, who scored 18 points. Katie Kinney had 16 points and Mikaela Headley donated 12.

The Lady Devils return to action on Thursday against Frontier.
