Buckeye Local's Lady Panthers mounted a double figure lead then held off a late East Liverpool comeback to score a 65-57 Wednesday night girls' basketball victory at Connorville.
Coach Willy Luther's quint led by 16-9 after one period and took a 31-23 upperhand to the lockerroom at halftime. Buckeye went on for a 50-35 advantage after three rounds.
Sophomore Lauren Swiger rifled home a game-leading 27 points for Buckeye and was joined in double digits by teammates Kayla Fillipovich and Becky Zeroski both of whom tallied 14 markers.
Fillipovich snared nine rebounds and Swiger brought down eight with Amy Balk grabbing six.
The Lady Panthers were scheduled to welcome Martins Ferry in a 6:30 varsity only contest this evening.
Toronto 55 St. John's 50
AT Toronto, the host Red Knights outpointed St. John's 31-19 over the middle two periods, then staved off a fourth quarter comeback bid by the Lady Irish.
Shelby Bodnar netted 19 game-high points for Toronto. A pair of freshmen topped Irish scorers with Marissa Rose scoring 12 points and teammate Jessica Alvey tallying 10. Seniors Kristen Russell and Kaydie Coppa netted nine points apiece.
St. John's was slated to entertain East Richland Christian tonight in the Greenhouse.
Fort Frye 56 Buckeye Trail 15
AT Old Washington, invading Fort Frye rebounded from Monday's loss at River to wipe out the Lady Warriors.
Taylor Buchanan and Brooke Borich netted 12 and 11 points, respectively, for Fort Frye. Morgan Liedtke provided 10-point support. Trail's Catie Smith topped the hosts with six points..
Fort Frye improved to 11-2 and next faces Huntington St. Joseph's.
