Fitting Tribute

BILL BRUBAKER and Ohio Valley swimming are synonymous.

After three decades of selfless duty to local prep swimmers, the Pennsylvania native has received his just due.

The OVAC Championship swimming meet will now be known as "The OVAC Bill Brubaker Swimming Championship."

It is a fitting and lasting tribute to The Linsly School coach and conference meet director. The award is the exclamation point on a remarkable 33-year OVAC resume.

The announcement is also well timed as it is conjunction with the OVAC celebrating its 70th anniversary.

The former WVU swimming star has distinguished himself as a teacher, coach and meet director.

After cutting his coaching teeth for one year with the Mountaineers, Brubaker matriculated to Wheeling and the rest is swimming history. He has personified loyalty and dedication, aiding countless student-athletes throughout the OVAC, not just the ones he has tutored at Linsly.

"The days of people doing something like this for 30-plus years are gone," said OVAC Executive Secretary Tom Rataiczak. "We've been so fortunate to have someone of Bill's expertise not only in swimming, but also in meet management run this championship."

Through his expertise, the OVAC Swimming Championships have blossomed into a major athletic spectacle, attracting hundreds of competitors each year while also enticing more and more schools to establish swimming programs.

Brubaker is the ultimate when it comes to sportsmanship. He makes the pool at Linsly School open year-round to anyone wishing to hone their skills, be it a Cadet or someone from an opposing school. He is passionate about making all swimmers better, not just those at Linsly.

But when it comes to his Cadet program, Brubaker has built a watery juggernaut. His teams have splashed their way to some two dozen OVAC titles. Brubaker has also groomed four all-American swimmers and 31 academic all-Americans.

The OVAC made a excellent decision in naming its swim championships after Bill Brubaker. He has proven himself as the consummate swimming professional.
