RICHMOND - A fast start keyed Harrison Central's 58-41 victory Wednesday at Edison.
The Huskies outscored the Wildcats 14-2 in the first quarter and 27-11 over the first 16 minutes of the game before cruising to the 17-point win.
"It was big," said Harrison Central head coach Justin Clifford of this team's early run. "We traditionally haven't played well here. We got beat here last year so we came out ready to play."
HARRISON CENTRAL’S Fletcher Watt (10) eyes the basket Tuesday night in Richmond.
After tying the score at two just under two minutes into the game, the hosts went without scoring until about a minute into the second quarter when a Ryan Kramarich bucket made the score 15-4.
"First quarter we came out sluggish," said Edison head coach Nate Moses. "We came out real sluggish. We came out and scored two in the first and were down 14-2 after one.
"You score two points in the first quarter, I'd say that's a sluggish start."
Kramarich led the Wildcats with a 10-point performance.
"Ryan's one of our three seniors," said Moses. "He played well tonight. He had 10 points. We don't look to him for a lot of scoring most nights, but he scored for us tonight. It was nice to see."
Fletcher Watt and Rashaen Mitchell spurred the Huskies first half dominance as they combined for all 14 Harrison Central points in the opening stanza, and scored 22 of 27 points for the half.
The dynamic duo shared top honors for the Huskies with 19 points each.
The second half saw the Wildcats have more success on the offensive end, being outscored just 31-30 over the final 16 minutes.
"We tried to sub some guys in there early and it didn't work out well for us, but they've got to get their feet wet sometime," said Clifford. "Those other guys stepped up. We didn't shoot real well in the second half, but give them credit, they played hard all the way to the horn.
"We've been trying to do it all year. There's going to be a time and a point where we may get in some foul trouble or something like that. We're trying to get some guys ready, and we'll see."
Nick Pelegreen joined Watt and Mitchell in double-digits with 13 points. He scored 11 of those in the second half.
Austin Hyndman and Dylan Jones each added nine points for the Wildcats.
