Ash Wednesday marks start of Lent

February 13, 2013
Times Leader
THE?REV. Thomas Murat at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Martins Ferry places blessed ashes in the form of the cross on the foreheads of Allyson and Daniel Goclan. The ashes serve as a reminder of mortality, sorrow for sins, change and forgiveness. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of 40 days of Lenten discipline for observant Christians. It is traditionally a season of fasting, prayer and penitence in preparation for the celebration of Easter Sunday on March 31.
