ST. CLAIRSVILLE - The St. Clairsville Board of Education met this week for their monthly meeting, which comes after two special meetings concerning an operating levy.
A resolution was passed to place a 2.75 mill levy on the upcoming ballot on May 7,.
The levy will be useful in assisting in addressed a handful of needs.
First and foremost, the additional money would aid in the repair of the elementary school's roof. The building is in need of a hefty amount of attention.
The district consulted with an architectural party to determine the work that would need to be done as many of the classrooms and bathrooms have sustained water damage during the course of the last several years.
The district initially planned on making necessary repairs but after consulting with experts in the area, a comprehensive redesign or replacement will be required.
Other funds will be delegated toward ensuring the security of the buildings in the wake of recent events across the country, which have spurred a slew of security concerns.
St. Clairsville continues to be one of the only districts in the county which has been able to house a law enforcement officer on campus at all times. The district wishes to maintain this level of security in addition to making improvements to doors, windows, and communications systems.
The rest of said funds would go to offsetting the substantial reductions in state funding coming down to many districts and municipalities across the state. From the 2011 to 2012 fiscal years, the district had lost more than $500,000 in state funding. Its prepared to lose more than $200,000 this school year. While the district has made several personnel and benefit reductions, a large gap continues to be financially worrisome as more cuts could begin affecting the level of educational service expected by the community.
It is important to note that while the previous bond expires, if the proposed levy is passed in May, collection rates would not increase. The 2.75 mill figure was selected to ensure no property tax increase to the people will occur.
