SHOWBOATS, excursion boats and packet boats were prevalent on the Ohio River in bygone years, and railroads also played a more important role in daily life.

The accompanying pictures and other photos are among the ones gathered by the late Robert H. Richardson who wrote "Tilton Territory" and "A Time and Place in Ohio."

Richardson lived with his wife, Ethel, in Tiltonsville, and his first book featured the Tiltons. It was published in 1977.

A VARIETY of boats could be seen on the Ohio River years ago, and this one was from Parkersburg. Robert Richardson’s book, “A Time and Place in Ohio,” tells about the various boats in bygone years.

He started to research and write about local history and genealogy after he retired as superintendent of industrial engineering for the Yorkville Plant of the Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Corp.

Among the organizations to which Richardson belonged were the Ohio Genealogical Society and the Ohio Historical Society.

His books provide a wealth of information about life in the communities of southern Jefferson County.

Richardson's painstaking research reveals details about governments, churches, schools, methods of transportation and other aspects of life as well as anecdotes, helping to enlighten readers about the background of those areas.
