Bridgeport High School's search for a girls' volleyball coach didn't take as long as the resume its new head coach brings with him.

Ron Kelly was introduced to the Bridgeport Exempted Village School District's Board of Education during its regular monthly meeting Monday night.

The intro came moments after the board unanimously approved his hiring. He replaces Dave Williamson who recently stepped down due to personal reasons.

"I'm excited," Kelly said. "In talking with some people about the program, I will guarantee you that it will be structured. We will teach, and even though I have a realm of experience in coaching, you still have to teach.

"Fundamentals are extremely important, and if you don't have the fundamentals, then you're going to have problems," he added. "So we have a challenge ahead of us, but we will keep working with the kids as much as possible."

Kelly said he has already explored the possibility of having open gym a couple times a week at night.

"We've got to get the girls interested in volleyball," he noted. "If we can get the cooperation, I think we can make a dent in the progress process."

Kelly, who is an amputee from the Korean War, started his coaching days at Garaway High School in Sugarcreek. He then matriculated to the Ohio Valley where he's been ever since. His first OVAC stop was Barnesville, followed by St. John Central and Union Local before winding back up at St. John Central.

His 2010 Lady Irish claimed the OVAC Class A championship. He has also served as the OVAC Volleyball All-Star Game Director.

"Ron brings a wealth of volleyball coaching experience to Bridgeport," High School Principal Rob Zitzelsberger said.
