ST. CLAIRSVILLE - Several Ohio Valley residents have made a commitment to improve their health and fitness levels this spring by joining the 2013 Library Walking Challenge. According to Polly Loy, Extension Educator - Family and Consumer Sciences for the OSU Extension in Belmont County, the response was terrific. Martins Ferry saw the most registrants with 109, followed by St. Clairsville with 104 and Bellaire with 76.

During the 11-week walking program, participants keep track of their average steps per day and work towards personal goals of increasing their number of steps walked. The program officially kicked off on March 18, which served as the "baseline week" for participants. During this week, participants tracked their daily steps on a step log to calculate their average number of steps per day by the end of the week. Participants should plan to report this average by Wednesday, March 27 to enter the first random prize drawing for insulated OSU lunch bags.

In addition, the first of the fitness coaching sessions, "The Truth about Getting Fit Wading through the Misinformation," begins next week at each library on the following dates and times:

No registration is necessary and all are welcome to attend. Upcoming 45-minutes coaching sessions include programs on "Smart choices at the grocery" and "Smart choices at the drive thru."

Everyone is urged to "Like" the Belmont County Family and Consumer Sciences page on Facebook for more information, encouraging pointers, helpful internet links, and lists of random drawing prize winners.

The walking challenge is sponsored by Ohio State University Extension, Belmont County and Martins Ferry, Bellaire and St. Clairsville Libraries and funded by a Virginia Gasaway Community Investment Grant from the American Cancer Society.
