Amarillo is back to defend its Lone Star Football League championship, and Bellaire graduate Nate Davis will once again be at the helm.

The Venom make their 2013 debut tonight inside the Amarillo Civic Center with Davis triggering the offense against the New Mexico Stars. Kickoff is set for 7:05.

Amarillo captured the inaugural LSFL "Texas Shoot-Out" title last July with a 62-40 triumph over the Rio Grande Valley Magic inside San Angelo's Foster Communications Center. Davis went 19-for-38 with seven touchdown passes in that game. He also scored on a 2-yard scamper.

Davis, who was drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft after a record-setting, 3-yr. career at Ball State University, played in 10 games with the Venom last summer. He completed 176 of 308 passes for 2,409 yards and a staggering 53 TD strikes.

Amarillo was struggling at 2-3 until Davis entered the lineup. He went 8-2 as the Venom starting quarterback. He finished first in the league in passing yards per game at 301.1 and total offense with a 306.8 norm. He was involved in 329 plays.

With Davis running the show, Amarillo led the LSFL with 58.9 points a game and first downs with 235.

The LSFL is down to five teams this season. In addition to Amarillo and New Mexico, other teams include the Abilene Bombers, Laredo Rattlesnakes and San Angelo Bandits.

Only four players, including Davis, are back for another season with Amarillo, and 13 of the 23 team members have no prior indoor football experience.

New Mexico got off to a good start with a 60-42 victory over debuting San Angelo last weekend.

Quarterback KJ Black, who played collegiately at Prarie View A&M, passed for 306 yards and six touchdowns.
