PONZO, Raymond V, 82, of Shadyside, Ohio died Friday March 22, 2013 in Liza's Place, Wheeling, WV.
Ray was born March 9, 1931 in Pittsburgh. PA a son of the late Louis and Elizabeth DiGiorno Ponzo.
Ray was Shadyside High School Band Director and Teacher from 1965-1995, Benwood Union Band Director, 1957-1965.
Ray received his degree from Carnegie Melon University in Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to orchestrating the "Best Damn Band in The Land" for 30 years, he was the boys basketball scorekeeper for 30 years. He started the "pep band" at basketball games, coached 7th grade boys basketball for 16 years, served as Shadean yearbook advisor and photographer for 13 years, produced and directed the Minstrels for 10 years, announced innumerable athletic events at Fleming Field, coached girls reserve basketball for four years, and was varsity cheerleader advisor for 5 years.
Ray's band won numerous awards at band competitions over the years and was honored by Presidents Kennedy and Nixon for its renowned patriotic halftime shows.
Ray directed The McMechen's Men's Chorus throughout the 1970's.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church Shadyside, a member of the Wheeling Symphony, served as a member of Shadyside Village Council and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents was his beloved wife, Bette Anne Steele Ponzo.
Surviving is his daughters, Raeanne Ponzo of Shadyside, OH and Melanie (John) Haswell, with whom he made his home; a brother, Louis (Irma) Ponzo of Bethel Park Pa; a sister, Betty (Bill) Daly of Long Island, NY; three beloved grandchildren whom were a part of his daily life, Nathan, Jake and Victoria.
Family and friends will be received Monday from noon to 8 p.m. at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Crematory, 3900 Central Avenue, Shadyside, Ohio.
Funeral Liturgy with Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday in St. Mary's Catholic Church Shadyside, Oh with Fr. Samuel Saprano as Celebrant.
Interment follows in Powhatan Cemetery Powhatan Point, Ohio.
