DEMOLITION WORK on the last two of five Martins Ferry houses using a $58,000 grant from Moving Ohio Forward will be completed this week with the razing of 535 N. Seventh St. and 912 Jefferson St. The other houses included 600 Belmont St., and 609 1/2 Mackey St. while 815 Washington St. is set to be demolished Wednesday. The Jefferson Street structure took the longest to demolish at five hours, since it was situated close to two other houses. An average demolition time for a two-story structure is four to five hours, while the average time to take down an empty one story structure is two to three hours. Code Administrator Betty Suto said the city is looking into a $28,000 Bel-O-Mar grant which could make the demolition of two additional houses possible. She estimates there are about 28 more structures in the city in need of demolition.
