Pitching must develop for Shadyside

Shadyside's Mike Meintel will depend on four senior leaders to show the way.

After the above-mentioned quartet, only underclassmen make up the Tigers' 2013 spring roster, though Meintel generally has a knack for bringing out the best in young talent.

"We'd have to consider this a rebuilding year for the Tigers," Meintel disclosed. "This team does have a very good work ethic and if we develop some pitching, we should be competitive."

PICTURED ARE the returning lettermen for the Shadyside baseball team. First row, from left, are Cody Hudson, Jared Brooks, Adam Stupak and Chase Kinemond. Second row, from left, are Trey Myers, Luke Nardo, Austin Dorris, Colten Campbell, Zach Frizzi and Jake Greegan.?Absent was Jake Spencer.

Three of the Tigers' 12th graders will see action on the hill, including experienced Jarod Brooks in addition to Cody Hudson and Adam Stupak. Hudson will also operate at third base with Stupak solid at shortstop.

Shadyside's fourth senior is Chase Kinemond, regarded among the school's most versatile athletes. Kinemond returns to the Fleming Field diamond following a year off due to surgery. He'll be a regular outfielder with the ability to cover a lot of ground.

A seven-player sophomore class includes a handful of players with varsity experience. Catcher/pitcher Austin Dorris, much like Kinemond, is an adept multi-sport performer. Dorris is considered a particularly strong baseball prospect.

Second baseman Luke Nardo should again make his presence felt along with classmate Zak Frizzi, an outfielder/pitcher. Remainder of the 10th grade contingent are first baseman/outfielder Jacob Spencer; first baseman/pitcher Colton Campbell; catcher/pitcher Trey Myers; and first baseman/outfielder Jake Greagon.

With an eager eight-player freshman group in the fold, Meintel is optimistic the program will continue to make good progress.

"This is the first time in several years Shadyside will field a jayvee team with a complete schedule. That's always a positive sign," Meintel disclosed.

Ninth grade candidates include second baseman/outfielder Cole Crow; outfielder Isaac Caldwell; catcher/outfielder Steve Dougherty; outfielder Josh McFarland; outfielder Chad Snyder; outfielder Shaun Hanson and pitcher/outfielder Travis Fulton.

"Once again, this year's schedule is very challenging, so our guys have to come ready to play every day," Meintel noted.

Missing from the Tigers' 2012 ball club are departees Kody Kubancic, Ike Williams, Chase Duncan, DJ Shoemaker and Zak Meadows.
