Another Forever Tax?

May 4, 2013

Dear Editor,

The Belmont County commissioners are discussing a $10 license plate fee for the residents of Belmont County.

Not surprising, they are not even mentioning an expiration date. Expiration dates are ignored anyway.

In the 90's they increased the sales tax in the county. Although the expiration date has long passed the tax is still being collected.

When I served on Bellaire's Downtown Revitalization Committee we floated the idea of a $5 license fee for the residents of Bellaire. Our intention was to use if for matching funds for a grant. The village council like the idea.

They passed it without hesitation but decided that it would be used for some other purpose. That was many years ago and I think it is still being collected.
