Harrison schools rated ‘Excellent’

CADIZ The school district has a new feather in its cap. During Thursday's board of education meeting, the board noted that the state recognized Harrison Junior Senior High School with a certificate of commendation for its Excellent score on the 2011-2012 report card.

Incoming Superintendent Dana Snyder noted that the school exceeded expected growth on their value-added measures. The middle school also received 100 percent for their indicators.

"In the district as a whole, this just shows that we are achieving, that we are educating our students, and we are looking for even better scores this year.

"I believe with Mrs. Snyder's leadership those scores will continue to go up within the district," said outgoing Superintendent Dr. George Ash, adding thanks to the district administrators for their work.

Also, the Opportunity School continues its educational program and will graduate three more students.

In matters of personnel, the board approved the retirement of Cynthia Lewis effective June 1, 2013, Gail Dennis, effective Aug. 1, 2013, and Linda Rusen, effective May 31, 2013.

Board confirmed the assignment of staff members for the 2013-2014 school year. These included Elizabeth Brooks, Language Arts, Harrison Central Junior Senior High School; Caitlin Noble, first grade, Harrison East; Michele Huston, Social Studies 4-9/Math 4-9, Harrison Central Junior Senior High School; Justin Kropka, OWE/OWA 9-12 (half time each), Harrison Central Junior Senior High School; Kathy Yoho, Title 1 intervention, Harrison East; Barb Chenoweth, MH Aide, Harrison East; Beth Fink, custodian, Harrison East.

Board approved a medical leave of absence for Julie Dickerson for 12 weeks beginning April 30, 2013.

Board approved Jodi Lash as substitute bus driver for 2012-2013 and confirmed Gale Zook as the bus driver for the summer enrichment program. Board also employed Tina Coffman as the lead mentor effective July 1, 2013. Board approved the resignation of Kristie Smith as MIECHV Home Visitor through Help Me Grow effective May 16, 2013.

Board approved TT Diloretto, Drew Horn, Nick Pelegreen, and Mike Wright as summer helpers.

Board approved the resignation of Becky Agositini, seventh grade volleyball, supplemental, and Ken Parker, assistant athletic director.

Board motioned to employ Heather Soos as first grade teacher at Harrison North for 2013-14 and Ken Parker as Middle School Principal at Harrison Central Junior Senior High School effective Aug. 1, with a two-year contract.

Board approved additional administrative days of employment for Duran Morgan beginning June 3, 2013 and ending Aug. 1, 2013 to be paid at the administrative assistant per diem rate.

Board approved Tammy Gross as seventh and eighth grade cheerleading advisor, supplemental, Shannon Pelegreen as varsity assistant volleyball and Franc Parziale, varsity assistant soccer.

Board approved the resignation of Robin Anderson as school psychologist effective Aug. 1. Board approved Janez Pecar as volunteer soccer boys coach for the 2013-14 school year.

Board approved the employment of Jane Herron as speech therapist for the 2013-14 school year.

In matters of business and operation, the board approved an agreement with Kathy Eddy to provide physical therapy services for the 2013-14 school year effective July 1.

Board approved an agreement with Amy Purcell, PTA, to provide physical therapy services for the 2013-14 school year effective July 1.

Board approved the Jefferson County Educational Service Center County Service Agreement for the 2013-14 school year.

Board approved a cooperative service contract with OMERESA for the 2013-14 school year, including in-service program, cooperative purchasing program, and legal services.

Board approved Porche Beetham, DO, Isam Tabbah, MD, and the Freeport Family Health Clinic to administer required physical examinations to school bus drivers for the 2013-14 school year.

Board approved a cooperative agreement with Franciscan Univeristy for the 2013-14 school year to allow students from Franciscan University to be placed in Harrison Hills for field base/clinical agreement.

Board approved a resolution to continue membership in the Ohio High School Athletic Association for the 2013-14 school year.

Board approved three section of roof restoration at Harrison Central Junior Senior High School under a state term contract.

Board approved an agreement between the Jefferson County Educational Service Center and the Harrison Hills City School District Board of Education. Governing entity encompasses a 12-month period July 1, 2013-June 30, 2014.

Board declares memorabilia from Harrison East of no education value or use and donates items to the Hopedale Alumni.

Board approved course fees for the 2013-14 school year.

Board approved a resolution opposing the expansion of the voucher program.

Board approved Julian & Grube, Inc. as the independent public accounting firm to examine the cost report as required by the Ohio Administrative Code at a maximum of $2,100 for the cost report period July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012, and $2,100 for the cost report July 1, 2012-June 30, 2013.

Board approved Love Insurance Agency for Student Accident and Sickness Insurance for fiscal year 2014.

Board entered into contract with Harrison County DJFS for the TANF summer youth employment program.

Board approved the renewal of the school Medicaid Program Service Agreement with Healthcare Process Consulting, Inc., beginning July 1, 2013 and ending June 30, 2014.

Board approved the revised five-year forecast of fiscal year 2013 through fiscal year 2017.

Board awarded bids for the 2013-14 school year to Nickles Bakery, United Dairy at firm price, Kimble Recycling and Disposal, Inc., and Zieglar Tire.

Board approved a resolution requesting the board submit to the electors of the school district the question of a renewal tax levy for the purpose of current expenses of the Puskarich Public Library tax levy for the purpose of current expense of the library.

Board entered into a contract with Hutton Auctions LLC to conduct a public auction of personal property that is no longer needed for educational purposes.

Board accepted two open enrollment applications for the remainder of the 2012-13 school year.

Board approved a use of facilities request from Amanda's Dance Academy.

Congratulation when to the choir and band for recent concerts, and to the boys baseball team for their performance. The baseball team is set to play Thursday at Zanesville, 2 p.m.
