CADIZ - The damp and chilly conditions Monday afternoon certainly aided the pitching in the annual Kyle Rose EOBL All-Star Classic.
Neither the big nor the smal schools pounded the cover off the ball during the game held at Robert Mazeroski Field.
The small schools, however, took advantage of three errors and got five base hits en route toa 3-0 victory before a large Memorial Day turnout.
BIG?SCHOOL third baseman Austin Curry, of Union Local, throws to first base for an out during Monday’s East Ohio Baseball League All-Star Game held at Mazeroski Field in Cadiz. Curry had the game’s only extra base hit, but the Big Schools lost, 3-0. Additional images may be found at cu.timesleaderonline.com
A trio of small-school pitchers - Cody Caldwell and Chad Isaly of River along with Linsly's Momo Felt - teamed to limit the big school offense to just two hits. They also fanned nine hitters in the game.
Caldwell was the game's starter and earned the win. All told, the big schools threatened just twice in the game.
They loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and had a runner advance to third in the fifth, but Felt induced a comebacker to keep the shutout in tact.
As it turned out, the small school's offense wasn't much more productive, but it was opportunistic, especially in the first inning.
Isaly led off the bottom of the first with a single. Barnesville's Dylan MacMillan legged out an infield hit and both runners took an extra base when the throw to first was air mailed down the right-field line.
The second error of the inning on the infield allowed both Isaly and MacMillan to score easily on a ball hit by Bridgeport's Jonathan Kreiter.
The game remained 2-0 until the fourth when Linsly's Justin Lee reached on a two-base error. He moved up 90 feet on a wild pitch and was then driven in on a single by River's Kam Brown.
Barnesville's Colton Pritchard also had two hits in the game.
Union Local's Austin Curry had the lone extra base hit in the game when he roped a double to leftcenter. Shadyside's Chase Kinemond had the other hit for the big-school squad.
THE REPRESENTATIVES of the host Huskies attended the game, but watched from the dugout since they'll be taking part in the Division II regional tournament this Thursday in Zanesville. Harrison Central will tangle with Vincent Warren at 2 p.m. at Gant Municipal Stadium.
BECAUSE OF a shortage of players, the big school team acquired the Shadyside representatives - Kinemond, Jared Brooks and Cody Hudson - to play on its side of the matter.
