Barbara Jeffries

THE JOY of music has been evident throughout the life of Barbara Jeffries who died Thursday night.

Not only did Jeffries enjoy music when she was growing up in Barnesville, but she earned a degree in music and voice at Baldwin-Wallace College.

One of her major musical accomplishments while working in the St. Clairsville-Richland School District was being founder of the St. C. Singers, a group which has earned many awards over the years. That was in addition to teaching vocal music.

Upon her retirement from the school district, Jeffries hit another high note by organizing Barb's Boys.

Well-known for presenting programs throughout the area, Barb's Boys gave more than 600 concerts. Their repertoire was varied, including patriotic and sacred music. That shows that the St. Clairsville woman was attuned to music appealing to many.

BARB'S BOYS and the St. C. Singers have been lauded for their music, and Jeffries herself was honored with a state award in 2003 because of her work with Barb's Boys.

She was given an Ovation Award for District 4, which is one of five districts in the state and includes Southeastern Ohio counties. Ovation Awards are given to individuals "for instilling and inspiring the love and discipline of vocal music through their work with children, adults and communities throughout Ohio."

Jeffries didn't limit her musical talents to the St. C. Singers and Barb's Boys. A member of the First Presbyterian Church in St. Clairsville, she served as choir director at both the Calvary and First Presbyterian churches. In addition, she was a member of the Ohio Valley Chorale.

The St. Clairsville woman's interests weren't limited to music. Her family was a vital part of her life, and she and her husband, Jim, a retired pharmacist, became the parents of three children, and their family also includes four grandchildren.

FEW PEOPLE have accomplished what she did in the field of music, and the love that she instilled in others concerning music will continue to endure.
