BRIDGEPORT - There was discussion on a wide variety of topics during Tuesday night's Bridgeport Exempted Village School District's Board of Education meeting.
Most of the talk centered around the board's displeasure with a statewide proposal to change the graduation requirements for the Class of 2017.
High school principal Rob Zitzelsberger explained to the five-member panel that the Ohio Education Association wants to do away with the Ohio Graduation Tests (OGTs) and institute a plan that would have each student taking 10 end-of-the-year exams.
"The magic number to graduate would be 25 points," he told the board and those in attendance. "They would have the rigor of the ACT."
Board member Jerry Moore voiced his displeasure.
"It upsets you to the point that they're not giving the kids a chance," he said. "It just aggravates you."
Superintendent Ted Downing said the state's proposal should be included in next school year's student handbook, and marked accordingly.
Moore, along with fellow board member Roger Stewart, suggested that the board invite state lawmakers Lou Gentile and Jack Cera to a meeting.
"We would like to have them all come," Moore said.
IN OTHER news, the district hired 10 new teachers for next school year.
Brought on board Tuesday night were Zachary Melton (Physical Education); Samantha Schaffner (Math); Derek Shell (Band Director); Kylee Carpenter (Intervention Specialist); and Stacey Shablack (Tutor). Previously hired were Vicki Falcone, Tara Uchbar and Alitza Grear.
SEVEN students were honored for various accomplishments during last school year.
They were: Briana Massey (Div. III state track meet qualifier in 200; and breaking school record in long jump, 16-6); Best of the Bulldogs Awards: Tate Eddy (5th Grade); Angela Sommer (6th Grade); Mary Jane Williams (7th Grade); and Jeremy McKivigan (8th Grade); and the Archie Griffin Sportsmanship Award: Treavon Clark and Samantha Ivan.
