Taste Buds: R&R Smokehouse Bar and Grille

July 3, 2013
By EMILY DOMINICI and SHAUNNA DUNDER HERSHBERGER - Taste Buds (tastebuds@timesleaderonline.com) , Times Leader

The Buds are pretty certain as to why, exactly, the month of July is practically synonymous with the term "redneck" - at least here locally.

We think it might have to do with an obscure little musical gathering known as Jamboree In the Hills. But we could be wrong.

As soon as the calendar flipped from June to July, the Buds got a hankering for some cowboy cuisine. Which is precisely how they ended up in Moundsville at the newly opened R&R Smokehouse Bar & Grill which - according to the menu - is 'Redneck Rehab.'

The R&R is located at 142 Lafayette Ave. at the site of the former Press Club and specializes in smoked ribs, chicken, brisket and pulled pork. Needless to say, the Buds couldn't wait to get their mitts on the grub! Settling into a booth they began to study their options.

The menu includes starters, salads, pasta, 'samiches', and belt-buster dinners as well as a selection of kids' meals.

The Buds were intrigued by the boiled peanuts on the appetizer list, but decided that $4 was a little more than they were willing to spend not knowing if they would like them or not. Other apps included the regulars: cheese sticks, wings, chicken tenders, etc. Salad options, or 'slim pickins', were garden, chicken Caesar, chef, grilled chicken, steak and a yummy sounding grilled salmon salad. Patrons will find two pasta dishes on the menu: chicken alfredo - made with their smoked chicken breast - and rigatoni marinara. Sandwiches include their brisket, pulled pork and several others such as BLT, burger, club and reuben. Finally, the belt-buster dinners at R&R feature various amounts and combinations of their smoked chicken, ribs, brisket and pork, as well as ribeye steaks and grilled salmon.

The Buds both opted to indulge in sandwiches that included their special smoked meats. Bud Em heeded the friendly server's advice and went with the brisket sandwich described as a half pound of dry rubbed brisket smoked to perfection and served on Italian bread which rang in at 10 bucks. Wowee! Sounds fabulous! Said Bud chose cole slaw for the side and also dished out an additional $2 for onion rings.

The sandwich was very large, although we did think it was a little pricey. The brisket had excellent flavor and was plentiful. Bud Em added a squirt of their mild barbecue sauce and dug right in. The slaw was also pretty good - not overly sweet as some tend to be - and the onion rings hit the spot.

Bud Shaunna decided to go with the pulled pork for 8 bucks. Half a pound of tender pork was piled onto a hearty, toasted bun, and Bud Shaunna also opted for cole slaw on the side. With some squirts of the spicy barbecue sauce on top, the sandwich was quite good, although after few bites, Bud Shaunna nixed the bun and ate the pork with her fork. There was definitely a ton of food for the price!

Neither Bud was able to finish her big sandwich, which meant they were too stuffed to give in to their sweet sounding dessert options - deep fried Snickers and Oreos! Oh well, maybe next time!

The R&R Smokehouse also has a DJ or a band on select weekends, as well as Wednesday night karaoke. If you're ready for a Jamboree in the Hills ramp up, head on in to 'Redneck Rehab' in Moundsville. It's sure to get you in the mood for the redneck party of the year!
