ABEL, Robert 'Bob', Sr., 82, of Bridgeport, passed from this life on July 4, 2013 with his family at his side. He was born December 21, 1930 in St. Clairsville, a son of the late Francis and Neva (Norman) Abel. He is preceded in death by his brothers Lee and Jimmy.
Bob married his beloved wife Katherine, in Columbia, South
Carolina, on November 30, 1951. Through their marriage, there was never an obstacle they could not overcome. They were truly best friends and devoted to one another in their over 63 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his sister Jo Ann of St.
Clairsville, 3 children, Janice (T.O.) Owings of Wheeling, Frank (Becky) from Salem, Ohio, and Bob, Jr. (Suzanne) from Warsaw, Indiana. He also has 5 grandchildren, Marc, Stephen, Michael, Nick, and Miranda, and two extra special great grandchildren, Eliza and Sam.
Bob graduated from St Clairsville High School in 1949. He proudly served in the US Army during the Korean War. Bob retired from the Mobay Chemical Company after 20 years of service and prior to that work for Nickle's Bakery.
With Bob, family always came first, but he was generous in sharing his time and many talents with others. He has made a difference in countless lives as father, coach, scout master, teacher, builder, athlete, sportsman, showman, and friend.
Bob was always singing. Be it in the church choir at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Wolfhurst or in the St. C Minstrel Shows or just about anywhere else he could find an audience. But his true music passion was Barbershop. For 25 years Bob was a member of the 'Pride of the Valley Chorus', and for 12 of those years he sang in his own quartet, aptly named, 'Something Special'. He held many leadership positions throughout those years, and brought joy to those who shared the experience of Barbershop music, and through the shows and programs, raised financial resources that benefited children who with disabilities. He sang, so that they might speak. Through his music he made a difference.
Always the dedicated and loyal alumnus, through the years Bob stayed closely connected with his Alma Mater, St C High, and among his many contributions, most notably has edited the St C Alumni News for the past 15 years.
Bob was a natural fund raiser. From church festivals and Bingo at the school, to Little League raffles, from Cub Scout candy sales, to Wheeling College phone-a-thons, and the most recent work at St C. in Dollars for Scholars, his efforts not only offered financial support to worthy causes, but also set an example for those around him to seize the day, to make a difference, and as he often challenged, 'Have the courage to make something happen.
Bob loved life. He left this world a better place. He reached out to embrace the world, and except for the Yankees and the Cowboys, loved everything in it.
True to the end, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Bob's name to the St Clairsville High Stadium Improvement Fund: PO Box 202, St Clairsville, Ohio 43950
