Pavilion is named in honor of longtime market manager

BARNESVILLE This summer marks the 20th anniversary season for the Barnesville Farmers Market, held every Saturday from 8 a.m. Until noon, running from the last Saturday in May through the last Saturday in August.

Last Saturday, the anniversary was officially observed with a special ceremony as the pavilion at the town's old railroad depot that houses the farmer's market was officially named The John Schradel Farmers Market Pavilion.

It also happened to be Schradel's birthday, and he and his wife Pat were surprised with a birthday cake, as well as u nveiling the renaming of the pavilion.

The market manager for 17 years, the pavilion was officially renamed in his honor, Saturday, in part of the market's 20th anniversary. Saturday also happened to be Schradel's birthday.

Schradel was the market manager for the farmers market for 17 of its 20 years.

He was also instrumental in getting the pavilion built, working countless hours to raise money and secure grant funding to ensure that it was completed.

The market originally began at the depot and was housed under tents in 1993.

Two years later, it was moved down the road to the Watt Center, before returning to the depot in 1999 upon the pavilion's completion.

"We see it fitting, on this day John's birthday to officially name this The John Schradel Farmers Market Pavilion," said Jane Jarrett, co-president of the market.

The market generally has between 10-12 vendors, sometimes a few more once the summer produce starts rolling in. It's always well attended.

There are farmers selling their crops and other vendors with baked goods, small crafts and even homemade honey for sale.

One gentleman sets up to sharpen knives. There is something for everyone at this community farmers market in Western Belmont County.

Vendors only need pay $4 per booth to set up and, if they want to pay $40 for the entire summer, they wind up saving around $12-16 dollars by doing so.
