MORRISTOWN - The Belmont County Sheriff's Department is awaiting autopsy reports before determining whether a security guard at a local business died as the result of foul play or other means.

Wilbur C. Kirk Jr., 42, of Barnesville, was found badly injured early Thursday morning outside the Morristown Pharmacy and Homecare. He died later Thursday at a local hospital.

Belmont County Sheriff David Lucas said his department was called to the scene at about 1 a.m. Thursday. They found an unresponsive Kirk, a security guard with McKeen Security of St. Clairsville, outside the pharmacy.

He appeared to have suffered contusions and other injuries, but authorities will await the autopsy to release a formal cause of death.

According to the sheriff, the pharmacy did not appear to be broken into, while Kirk was not shot. Officials are not ruling out a medical emergency.

"The autopsy is being performed today in West Virginia," Lucas said Friday morning. "My investigators will take that information and continue their investigation. We are in the very early stages of this investigation and I do not want to speculate," Lucas said. "We are taking baby steps. Our investigators are on top of it."
