OFF THE TEE: Sectional golf tournaments begin this week in Ohio

The first Ohio postseason event of the school year has arrived.

The regular season of prep golf ended this past weekend and area players will focus their attention on making a run toward the OHSAA State Tournament, which is set for next month.

The sectionals begin for Division II on Monday and Division III on Tuesday. Both tournaments will be played at Willandale in Sugarcreek.

The top four teams and top four individuals who aren't members of one of the top four teams in the Division III field will advance to the district tournament at River Greens in West Lafayette.

Vying for those spots in the smallest division are: Barnesville, Beallsville, Bishop Rosecrans, Bridgeport, Buckeye Trail, Catholic Central, Conotton Valley, Fort Frye, Garaway, Hiland, Malvern, Monroe Central, Newcomerstown, Ridgewood, Shadyside, St Johns Central, Strasburg Franklin, Toronto and Tuscarawas Central Catholic.

The Division II event will be held at River Greens and the top four teams and four individuals not on those teams will return to the same course a week later for the district tournament.

Competing in D-II are: Buckeye Local, Cambridge, Claymont, Coshocton, East Liverpool, Edison, Harrison Central, Indian Creek, Indian Valley, John Glenn, Martins Ferry, Maysville, Meadowbrook, Minerva, Morgan, Philo, River View, Sandy Valley, St. Clairsville, Steubenville, Tuscarawas Valley, Union Local and West Muskingum.

The Division II girls' sectional will be held on Wednesday at River Greens with the same qualifying method in play.

The girls' district will be held at Blacklick Woods Golf Course in Reynoldsburg.

Slated to take part are: Barnesville, Beaver Local, Bishop Rosecrans, Cambridge, Carrollton, Claymont, Conotton Valley, Dover, Edison Local, Fort Frye, Garaway, Indian Valley, John Glenn, Martins Ferry, Maysville, Meadowbrook, Minerva, Monroe Central, Philo, Ridgewood, River, River View, Sandy Valley, Strasburg and West Muskingum.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Hole 'N Run event was held on Sept. 15. Roger Kupfer prevailed with a round of 65. Dan Willming was second with a 68 and Bob McLaughlin was third with a 69.

In the handicap scoring, Tony Campbell was the winner with a score of 64. Jim Ennis was second with a 66 and Paul Alig Jr. was third at 67.

ROBBINS RIDGE GOLF

Larry Robinson posted the closest to the pin and Garry Mayberry was the closest to the pin on the second shot during play this past week in the Senecaville Senior League. The low gross crown for the week went to the duo of Allender and Davis with a 34. The same pair captured the low net as well with a score of 31.

OVGA

The final weekend of the 2013 Ohio Valley Golf Association schedule is upon us. The Frontier Communications Ohio Valley Amateur concludes today at Wheeling Country Club.

The standings for the OVGA, which are used to determine the player of the year, are as follows:

Championship Division: Bryan Myers (205); Larry Lis Jr. (170); Thadd Obecny II (150); Rob Cimarolli (80) Bob Potts (73).

Senior Division: Mike Wilson (147); Gary Schrickel (118); John Bailey (96); Dave Clarke (93); Ron Helms (83)

Junior Division: Thadd Obecny II (1550); Kyle Wensel (1215); Mike Spitak (760); Elizabeth Douglas (600); Kaitlynn Bliss(520).

The champions of their respective divisions will be recognized at the OVGA Appreciation Banquet on Wednesday at Wheeling Park's White Palace.
