BUILT years before the Civil War, the last S-bridge in service in Ohio has been closed because of concerns that heavy trucks used in the drilling boom are too heavy for a span which once carried stagecoaches and wagons. Located on the National Road between Middlebourne and Old Washington, it is a National Historic Landmark and a National Engineering Landmark. Among the famous men who traveled over the bridge were Abraham Lincoln and Henry Clay, the latter who often stayed in Middlebourne on his way to and from Washington, D.C., to his home in Kentucky. Some people are hopeful the area can be turned into a park.
