GROVES, Robert

GROVES, Robert H., of Barnesville, Ohio (formerly of National Rd. in Belmont, Ohio) was born on August 20, 1935 in Warnock, Ohio to the late Harry and Frances (Workman) Groves, of Centerville, Ohio.

He passed from this life on the afternoon of Friday, October 11, 2013 at the Emerald Point Health Care Center.

He graduated from Smith Township High School in Centerville, Ohio in 1953. He attended The Ohio State University where he earned his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees.

He then received his PHD from OSU in 1975. He was a part of the ROTC program there and served as a Captain in the United States Army and in the reserves.

He was employee of The Ohio State University Extension 4-H Program for 30 years. He served as a County Extension Agent and as Area (District) 4-H Extension Agent for Eastern Ohio. He was a member of the State Extension Committee, President of the Ohio Extension (4-H) Agents Association and as President of Epsilon Sigma Phi. He retired in l988.

He actively served his community and Church. He had served as President of the Belmont County Farm Bureau Association, and President of the St. Clairsville Ruritan Club. He served as an Elder in four different congregations; with the most recent being the Bethesda Christian Church, since 1991. He was Chairman of the Board there for many years.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Zella Bridgeman, Lura Groves and Lena Groves.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia (Hinkle) Groves. He is also survived by a niece, Florence (and Bill) Trubiano of Minnesota; and three children, Marcia (and Chuck) Brothers of Georgia, Keith (and Katerina) Groves of Indiana, and Susan (and Doug) Thoburn of Ohio. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be given to the OSU 4-H Foundation or the Bethesda Christian Church.

Family and friends will be received at Toothman Funeral Home in St. Clairsville, Ohio on Monday, October 14th, with visitation from 4-8 p.m.

Visitation will also be on Tuesday, October 15 at the Bethesda Christian Church in Bethesda, Ohio from 10-11 a.m. The service will be at 11 a.m. at the church. Minister Tim Snyder will be officiating.

Committal will follow at Union Cemetery in Morristown, Ohio where full Military Honors will be held by the Belmont County Veteran's Association.
