McLure House, Wheeling, W. Va.

THE MC LURE HOUSE, Wheeling, W. Va., was constructed in 1851, has a long impressive history. Union General Wm. G. Rosecrans once chose the hotel to be the headquarters of the Army of Western Virginia. The founder of Statler Hotels chain, worked at the McLure in 1876 as a bellhop and later the manager. Senator Joseph McCarthy announced his campaign against communism at the hotel to local Republicans, and Richard Nixon met Dwight Eisenhower at the McLure. The Hotel underwent extensive remodeling in 1985, and other remodeling since then. Submitted by Joanie Appenzeller.
