Drivers encouraged to 'Celebrate my Drive'

BELMONT -- Driving a car is one of the few true rites of passage celebrated in this country.

Celebrate my Drive, powered by State farm insurance, is all about honoring this tradition and the freedom that comes with earning your license.

Running through Saturday, the contest is asking people aged 14 and older to sign on to www.celebratemydrive.com and make a daily commitment to safe driving.

The more commitments you make in your school's name, the better chance your school has of winning a grant for your school, and possibly more.

While adults are also encouraged to participate in the contest, the website will ask which school your are making a commitment for.

Locally, Union Local is in 75th place nationally out of about 4,000 schools participating in the United States and also Canada.

Amy Latham, who operates her State Farm agency in Bethesda, is encouraging students in her district to come out and vote and try to help out the district.

The contest is divided into small and large schools.

The top five in each district will win a $100,000 grant while the top 45 will receive a $25,000 grant.

There are also two grand prizes of a concert by Kelly Clarkson.

"Anyone can sign up," Latham said. "It doesn't have to be a student at Union Local. Anyone in the community can participate."

Latham noted that her district is close to the top 45 for small schools and that a last minute push could be enough to put Union Local into receiving a grant.

"I want to thank everyone who has participated and encourage everyone to keep making that commitment," Latham said. "Thank you for your support of Union Local High School and our teen drivers.

"And remember, 2N2: Two eyes on the road, two hands on the wheel."
