EARNING HALL of fame induction is the pinnacle of any profession.

Gene Ammirante has attained that status, and the former Bellaire High basketball coaching luminary is very deserving of such plaudits.

Ammirante was notified earlier this month that the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association will formally induct him April 27 into its Hall of Fame.

With his glowing credentials, it was only a matter of when rather than if in regards to Ammirante and hall enshrinement.

Ammirante's resume as Bellaire basketball coach speaks for itself. His coaching accomplishments are staggering.

The West Liberty product guided the Big Reds to 471 victories, six regional trips and a 2004 trip to the Division III state tournament. His teams won 14 OVAC championships and played in 14 district tournaments. Ammirante's 1993-94 and 2005-06 teams finished the regular season with spotless 20-0 records.

He was named Division II State, Eastern District and District 12 Coach of the Year during his career. He was the OVAC Coach of the Year in 2004. He coached the Ohio North-South All-Star Game in 1997.

Ammirante and halls of fame are no strangers. He was inducted into the OVAC Hall of Fame in 2012.

Coach A did more than just win games at the Guernsey Street school.

He helped expose countless youngsters to basketball. He is legendary for his Saturday morning camps at Bellaire High and clinics in the city of Wheeling. He still serves on the OVAC Basketball Committee.

Ammirante is ambassador for the game. He does it in a very humble and giving style.

Ammirante was not only a special coach, but also a special individual. His induction into the state basketball hall of fame was a slam-dunk.
