Buckeye welcomes new board members

BRILLIANT -- The Buckeye Local School District Board of Education met at North Elementary in Brilliant earlier this week, with all but one member present, outgoing member Chuck Haggerty.

A sizeable number the individuals who had been among the 12 candidates running on the slate for the three seats opening in January were present at this week's meeting.

Naoma Kolkedy was returned to her seat on the board for the term beginning in January.

The other two successful candidates for the seats were Dirk Pielech and Jim Cesario, and both were in attendance at the meeting.

Buckeye Local School District Superintendent Mark Miller took this week's meeting as an opportunity to congratulate the incoming board members, noting they will take office in January.

In other unrelated matters, the school board voted its unanimous approval of a resolution, "declaring urgent necessity, waiving competitive bidding and authorizing the Superintendent to contract with Johnson Boiler Works Inc. for labor and material to replace a damaged furnace at Buckeye Local High School at a cost of $75,000.00."

Superintendent Miller confirmed for the board that three-quarters of the urgently needed funding necessary to replace a damaged furnace at the school will be covered by insurance monies.

The unit is also expected to be more efficient in its operation.

Miller confirmed several dates related to upcoming events: Thanksgiving Break continues through Monday; the annual Family Fun Night activities will be enjoyed at Buckeye Local High School on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.; the Wellness Committee will meet Friday, Dec. 20 at 12:45 p.m. at the Central Office; the district's Christmas Break will be observed Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 through Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014; the end of second nine weeks will be Friday, Jan. 17, 2013;

Miller also reminded those attending the meeting a first of its kind in-service for the district will be held Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2014 at the high school and will be led by a team of United States Secret Service Agents and Frank Hoagland, Senior Chief (Retired) U.S. Navy SEAL and owner of the locally based S.T.A.R.T. ,LLC (Special Tactics and Rescue Training).

START is under contract with the district to complete a highly focused year-long all risks assessment of Buckeye Local School District's actual safety and security readiness status across all its operations. As part of the agreement Hoagland and his hand selected team will provide extensive details to the board concerning how to efficiently and effectively implement some or all of START's the customized recommendations.

At this week's meeting board members unanimously supported Hoagland's request for permission to conduct a beta test of a proprietary application designed to provide exceptionally improved daily accountability details to the district in an almost unlimited scope..

Miller also confirmed the district spelling bee will be held at the high school on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2014 and will begin at 6 p.m.

Other matters of business addressed at the Buckeye Local school board meeting held recently included public recognition that the following teachers were awarded funds from a State driven program; Emily Long of South Elementary, was awarded a $500 Best Practice Grant; Heather Long of the North Elementary staff was awarded a $500 Best Practice Grant; and also Jenny Potts on staff at South Elementary was awarded a $500 Best Practice Grant.

The next meeting will be held Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at 6 p.m. at the administrative office in Dillonvale.
