BRIDGEPORT - Advance America, the Brookside Fire Department and the Bridgeport Police Department are teaming up for the first ever "Boots vs Badges" Blood Drive.
"This is to bring awareness for the need for blood in the Ohio Valley," said Brookside Fire Chief Allan Ketzell III. "This is a friendly competition between the police and fire departments that we are challenging all public safety entities to come and give back. This is the first year we have started this. Advance America contacted Bridgeport Police Department and they came to us and wanted to know if we wanted to be involved and we thought it was a very good and worthy cause ... We appreciate everything the public does for us and we hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays."
Those who donate can vote for the Boots (the fire departments) or the Badges (the police departments). There will be a police chip and fire chip and you can vote for the public safety entity you want to.
The department (police and fire) with the most donors at the end of the day will not only feel a sense of accomplishment in facilitation to save more lives, but will receive a trophy earning them the bragging rights around the county.
If you would like to sign up or schedule an appointment to donate blood for the blood drive, you can visit www.redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS to register. In addition, the first 100 donors will receive a free t-shirt. For information, call: Advance America, 740-633-5132; Bridgeport Police Department, 740-635-9999; or Brookside Fire Department, 740-635-1997. This is open to the public as well.
"We hope we have a good turn out to try and make this an annual thing and we want to stress that this is open to the public to come down, vote and have a good time," said Bridgeport Police Chief Andy Klotz.
