BARNESVILLE - The Village of Barnesville began next year's business at Monday night's meeting. The Ohio Public Works Commission awarded Barnesville a grant for the Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Phase III Project in the amount of $189,200. Village Administrator Roger Deal announced the award, and council members approved Deal's advertising for bids. The project is estimated in excess of $250,000.
Deal scheduled the bid opening for the elevator project at the Municipal Building for Friday, Jan. 10 at 10 a.m. There is a mandatory pre-bid meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 10:30 a.m.
Council approved Ordinances 3633 to 3643 granting pay raises to Village employees in the water, sewer and street departments, the emergency squad, the cemetery and Memorial Park, as well as the economic development director, village solicitor, fire chief, village operations manager, village administrator, income tax clerk and fiscal officer. In addition, part-time, full-time and administrative employees will receive bonuses ranging from $150 to $1,500 per approved Ordinance 3644.
The new International dump truck is in, and Deal thanked council members. He said he is happy with the truck's stainless steel bed and thinks it will hold up well. The 1997 truck that this is replacing will be sold to Somerset Twp.
Deal reported that several guardrails throughout the Barnesville area are in need of repair or replacement, including ones near the Senior Center and along Railroad St. where wooden posts are rotting at ground level. Council authorized Deal to prepare a bid packet and advertise for the project.
One building permit was approved for Craig Leasure, 357 Franklin St., for a vinyl soffit.
Larry Merry, director of the Belmont County Port Authority, told members that the water line extension project along State Route 800 is nearly complete. He thanked council members for their efforts and recognized in particular the three councilmen leaving Dec. 31: Brad Hudson, Tony Johnson and William Stottler.
Deal also took a moment to recognize the late Clyde Wittenbrook, 92, the long-time manager of the Barnesville Airport.
There will be a Recreation Center meeting on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m. at the youth center.
Barnesville village council meetings are held every other Monday at 7 p.m.
