MARTINS FERRY - Shayla Markovich had game-highs of 15 points and 10 rebounds as Barnesville rolled to a repeat, 53-30, victory over homestanding Martins Ferry Saturday night in girls' basketball action inside the Tolbert Gymnasium.

The Shamrock sophomore netted eight of her markers in the opening half as the visitors overcame a slow start to lead 23-16 at the half.

"I thought we really played good defense today," Barnesville head coach Jamie Carpenter said. "That is what is going to win girls' basketball games ... defense."

BARNESVILLE’S Shayla Markovich (44) powers her way past Martins Ferry’s Brooklyn Monroe (2)?Saturday night inside Tolbert Gymnasium. The Shamrocks won, 53-30.

After the Purple Riders (2-6) scored the first basket of the game on a Morgan Stalder layin, they misfired on their next 10 shots from the floor.

"We have to know what our rotations are on defense, and I think we stayed within them today," he added. "We want to make teams shot from the outside because there aren't many teams that can do it consistently."

Barnesville added to its margin for a 33-24 advantage after three quarters.

Avery Hanlon came off the Shamrocks' bench to score 10 points, seven coming in the second half. Markovich tallied eight of her game-high total in the fourth quarter, including 5-for-6 from the free throw stripe.

"That's what we expect from her," Carpenter said of Markovich. "She could do that every night if she wanted to. Avery has been improving each game bit by bit. We told her to take it to the hole."

Paige Huntsman finished with eight points for Barnesville as she knocked down a pair of treys.

Stalder and Tyrah King evenly divided 16 points to lead Martins Ferry. Sydney Bridges added seven.

Barnesville led 40-34 off the glass as Miranda Plumly also grabbed 10 boards. Bridges had nine for the Purple.

The Shamrocks also had one more turnover at 21-20.

No JV game was contested.

Barnesville returns to action Jan. 2 as it hosts Beallsville. Martins Ferry treks to Richmond Monday to meet Edison.
