MARTINS FERRY - The Martins Ferry Police Department swore in two new officers on Friday afternoon.

Gregory Saunders and Justin Wise were both hired and sworn in as part-time officers for the city of Martins Ferry.

Saunders has worked at several other police departments in Ohio as an officer. Saunders applied to Martins Ferry Police Department after a friend who once worked at Martins Ferry spoke very highly of the department.

"I wanted to join a department I knew had high standards and high quality," said Saunders, who has been an officers for three years. "I think the best thing (about being an officer) is when you actually go out and answer calls and make a difference as far as if you can solve a crime or deter criminal activity, it's a really good feeling ... I am excited to start working."

Wise has been an officer for a year and a half working for Bethesda Police Department.

"I wanted to be part of a team," said Wise. "I have heard a lot of good things about Martins Ferry and I was hoping to get on. (One of my favorite things) is being able to help people, serve the community and build public relations."
