CADIZ - At Thursday night's village council meeting, Harrison County Prosecuting Attorney Michael B. Washington announced that he will be running for election in the Republican primary.
Washington is a native of Cuyahoga County who attended the University of Akron for undergraduate and law school. He has lived and worked in Harrison County for 12 years. Washington said that he has enjoyed his work and the relationships he has cultivated with local law enforcement.
Two organizations were granted permission by the council to display banners at the Square for upcoming events. The Cadiz Business Association will hang a banner advertising their March 15 banquet. The Cadiz Lions Club will be advertising the 3rd Annual Soup/Salad Day, which is set for Saturday, April 5 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Theresa Activity Center. All proceeds will benefit the Cadiz Food Pantry, and questions may be directed to Dale Davis at 740-391-4135.
Charley Bowman, of Economic Development Data Services (EDDS), discussed two proposed ordinances going through the Planning Commission. The first one deals with a conditional use permit for temporary transitional housing, called "crew camps." The ordinance details standards for living along with zoning, parking, registration, etc., and would need to receive the health department's approval in addition to council's. The second proposed ordinance concerned the definition of household. Council has received complaints about overcrowding in single family residential zone districts. The ordinance will allow the village to define a family for the purpose of residing in a single family district.
"The intent of this is not to go out and knock on every door and see who's living there, but really to respond on a complaint basis. This gives us the ammunition to go investigate and determine whether things aren't the way they should be," said Bowman.
Council will review both proposed ordinances and likely have a first reading at the next meeting, which will be held March 6 at 7 p.m.
Council member Paul Coffland announced that campers are invited to attend the next Park Board meeting, which will be held March 25 at 6 p.m. at Wallace Lodge.
